Create-A-Playlist

Create-a-Playlist

Music conveys emotion in ways that text alone often cannot.

Music supports the plot line in films, for example, by creating meaning beyond the actions and words of characters.

But what do you think the characters in fictional stories would listen to if they had an iPod?

Your team challenge this week is to create an original playlist for a character from The House of the Scorpion. Your team must agree on the character and work together to find 10 songs that your character would have on their playlist. As always, you must provide textual support and clearly explain your choices. Furthermore, everyone on your team must contribute to the playlist. Your final post must include:
  • 10 playlist items labeled with NAME and PERFORMER/COMPOSER
    • if available, songs may be linked to ViVo to allow your audience to listen to your selections
  • each song choice is explained as well as supported with specific quotations
  • each song is labeled with whose choice it was (your goal is to work as a team, reach consensus, and contribute equally to this process)
  • an introductory roundtable explaining why the group choose this character
  • interesting, relevant images to "spruce up" your post and engage your audience

Steps You Should Take:
  • Decide amongst yourselves which character you want to create the playlist for. This character must be introduced in chapters 1-16.
  • Record your roundtable about why your group chose this character.
  • Start looking for additions to the playlist, supporting these ideas with SPECIFIC EXAMPLES FROM THE TEXT!
  • Compile your ideas and whittle your choices down to 10. This process will involve discussion and compromise, and might be tough. STAY CALM!
  • Publish your weekly team post by Friday after the editor has looked it over.

You may compose a piece of music if you like, but pay attention to the deadline and your requirements to the team!

Oh, and you cannot choose Matt.

Maria

We chose Maria because she is very happy and nice, so we think it's a very easy & fun thing to make a playlist for a character who loves everything and cares about everything. Here is our discussion:

"All You Need is Love", The Beatles (Found by Maxim): This song speaks about love. Maria really likes a lot of things, and you can basically describe her as someone who loves everything.

“Happy People”, R. Kelly (Found by Maxim): Maria is very happy. And guess what this song is about? Its about happy people. Its about what María likes, she likes people, especially when they are happy. It says that all happy people dance and that everyone should be happy. And this is how Maria feels. She doesn’t understand why pe ople become unhappy and mad at each other for odd reasons.

“Born This Way (Cover)” - Maria Aragon - Lady GaGa (Found by Maxim): This song speaks about how María thinks of Matt, because he was born that way, as a clone and that doesn’t define a person, on how he was born, its how he lives, not how hes born. Maria says that Matt is exactly like the rest of the humans, he not different

“Imagine” -  John Lennon (Found by Maxim):

This song describes about how Maria feels about Matt and the world. She believes that everyone is the same, so that everyone would live together, clone or human. The songs says that what would happen if there weren’t all the stuff in this world that made us different. Like no possessions and no religions.

“We Shall Be Free” - Garth Brooks (Found by Maxim): This song speaks about how everyone is equal. It doesn’t talk about clones but if you listen to the song, you will get the idea. Maria says that its completely wrong for clones to be discriminated. She says that clones are just like humans. I agree with this song, and with Maria. I wouldn’t discriminate clones either.

“Here Comes the Sun” - The Beatles (Found by Jack): This song is very cheerful, and it sort of describes María’s cheerful and Happy side, and how she is very happy all the time. I think it would be suitable because the sun sort of represents all happy and nice things, since it is warm and welcoming.

“Hot ‘N Cold” - Katy Parry (Found by Jack)
I think this song works incredibly well because María can be sort of described as Bi-Polar. Meaning to her everything is either super awesome or horrible & devastating. This song is about how everything is cold or hot, so neither of them are that great, but its never in the middle as warm, or in María’s case; okay, or normal.

“Ready to Go” - Republica (Found by Jack)
this song represents María adventurous/happy nature and the fact that she is never afraid to speak her mind on things. I think this song fits well because María always likes adventure, and she always has a opinion of her own, and never afraid to say it out loud. Like

“Friends Forever” - Vitamin C (Found By Jack) This song speaks of friendship, and how you will be friends with someone forever, and no matter what you are still friends. This could describe María’s friendship with Matt, and how even if everyone else thinks Matt is some sort of evil creature, María is still friends with him. Some evidence is on Page 26-27, where even when Steven and Emilia say how bad they think Matt is, María still wants to be friends with him, and she offered to peel a orange for him.
